Good Morning!

TIP OF THE DAY

By Following Dr. Bayrakdarian's guidance on dental hygiene and avoiding certain foods while wearing braces, you will be on track to a lifetime of healthy teeth and a beautiful smile!

Plaque is the reason that patients need to be vigilant about dental hygiene during orthodontic treatment. If plaque is left on teeth and around braces, patients may develop swollen gums, bad breath, scarred and discolored teeth, and even cavities. When plaque is removed regularly during treatment, patients are rewarded with the best possible results in the shortest time possible.

To help you in your fight against plaque, Dr. Bayrakdarian recommends the following tools:

1. Toothbrushes (manual, travel and power varieties);
2. Fluoride toothpaste;
3. Dental floss;
4. Interproximal brush-tiny, cone-shaped brush that is designed to slip under the archwire and remove plaque and food particles in hard-to-reach spots around brackets and between teeth; and
5. Fluoride rinse.

Once you have the proper tools, you can fight plaque by following these guidelines. To begin, patients should clean their teeth at least four times a day (after each meal and before bed) with a soft, rounded-bristle manual or power toothbrush in good condition and a fluoride toothpaste. and Dr. Bayrakdarian's instructions on how to properly brush with braces should be followed. Patients also need professional cleanings at the dentist's office at least every six months to keep teeth and gums in top condition during orthodontic treatment. even with diligent attention to daily dental hygiene, professional cleanings are key in removing plaque build-up!

FUN FACTS ABOUT BRACES

  • The first braces were invented in 1720 and were made of a flat strip of metal, which was connected to the teeth by pieces of thread.
  • The first orthodontic bands were invented in 1841 and consisted of a strip of metal with a screw to adjust the size.
  • The ancient Greeks combined base metals and cat "guts" to improve their smiles around 1000 BC.
  • Your're never too old to enjoy a great-looking smile. Over 1 million Americans over the age of 18 have used orthodontics to straighten their teeth.
  • You don't have to wait to loose all your baby teeth before you start braces. In some cases, it's better to start your orthodontic treatment as early as possible!
  • Nearly 25 percent of patients will have to have braces again because they didn't wear their retainers as instructed.

When is the best time to begin treatment?

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO BEGIN TREATMENT?

Orthodontic treatment can be started on certain types of tooth problems before all permanent teeth have erupted. Early treatment, usually begin after the four permanent upper and lower front teeth have erupted (ages 7-9), treatment is recommended when any of the problems illustrated are apparent:

OVERJET: Upper front teeth protrude.

UNDER BITE: Lower front teeth protrude.

OVER BITE/DEEP BITE: Upper front teeth cover lower front teeth too much.

OPEN BITE: Back teeth are together with space between the front teeth.

CROWDING: Upper and/or lower teeth are crowded.

EXCESS SPACING: There is excess space between teeth.

MID-LINE MISALIGNMENT: Mid-lines of upper and lower arches do not line up.

THE ADVANTAGES OF EARLY TREATMENT INCLUDE:
* Moving the front teeth back so they will be less susceptible to injury.
* Improving the relationship of upper and lower jaws, allowing more normal future growth and development.
* Using maximum advantage of growth for successful treatment.
* Improving facial appearance and self-esteem.
* Taking advantage of the good cooperation of patients at this age.
* Possibly avoiding or reducing the need for further treatment when patients are older.

I had a fun time. I really enjoy the staff, they were nice and kind and very careful. ~Patient Shoulong Yang
A cool tip about Damon braces:

Damon braces get tighter when you drink hot liquids and looser when you drink or eat something cold.

If your braces are ever feeling uncomfortably tight, to have a glass of ice water and the pressure will be relieved. On the other hand, hot drinks actually cause the wire to tighten up a little. Had no idea? It sure does explain why you always feel your teeth moving after a morning cup of coffee!
