Isabel Bayrakdarian burst onto the international opera scene after winning first prize in the 2000 Operalia competition founded by Plácido Domingo. Since then she has performed in many of the world's major opera houses and concert halls. She is admired as much for her stunning stage presence as for her exceptional musicality, and she has followed a career path completely her own.

In the 2010-2011 season Ms. Bayrakdarian makes her Tanglewood debut in Poulenc's Gloria with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the direction of David Zinman and sings selections of Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn with the Aspen Music Festival with Marin Alsop. She returns to the Canadian Opera Company as Pamina in Die Zauberflöte and Euridice in Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice, and will reprise her interpretation of Janáček's The Cunning Little Vixen for her debut with the New York Phiharmonic under the direction of its music director Alan Gilbert. Important concert appearances include Mahler's Symphony No. 2 with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Peter Oundjian, an arias program with the Seattle Symphony and Nicholas McGegan, Gorecki's Symphony No. 3 with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and John Axelrod, and the premiere of a new work by Serouj Kradian with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Anne Manson. She also appears in recital with her husband, pianist Serouj Kradjian, at London's Wigmore Hall and Ars Nova in Ottawa, Ontario.

Thursday is Mexico’s 200th anniversary of their independence from Spain, but the party started early in Fresno.

To mark the occasion, the Mexican Consulate in Fresno invited dozens of Valley residents to celebrate at the University House on Van Ness Boulevard in Fresno.

In the mist of all the political and economic hardship in Mexico, from the war against drug cartels to immigration reform, Tuesday night was a night to set all that aside and just have a good time.

Reyna Torres, the consul of Mexico in Fresno said, "I think for all Mexicans, it's a once on a life time occasion, so we are taking advantage of the fact that we are here and can celebrate with friends and family."

The Mexican Consulate of Fresno says in the midst of a recession and a bloody war against drug cartels, Thursday's global celebration will lift the spirits of the Mexican people.

Mexican Independence Day is Thursday, September 16th and the celebration continues in downtown Fresno at the Fulton Mall through Sunday.

The importance of retainers:

After braces are removed, teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Dr. Bayrakdarian is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime. Here are some things to remember when you receive your retainers:

* Wear your retainers full time, until the doctor instructs otherwise. Wearing your retainers at night ensures that your pearly whites won’t relapse.

* Take your retainers out when eating…and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunch rooms or restaurants.)

* Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and only a small amount of toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water.

* When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case.

* Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken, give us a call immediately.

* Remove retainers when swimming or during any sporting activity in which the retainers could fall out and get broken or lost (cheerleading, basketball, etc.) or when you should be wearing a mouth guard (football, soccer, etc.).

Damon Braces

For most adults that require traditional brace systems, self-ligating braces or popularly known as Damon braces are usually the better choice. These types of braces do not need the round elastics or the ligatures that hold the arch wire in place. Along with advantages like lower friction and fast-working action, the absence of elastics makes it much less likely for the braces to get stained from coffee or cigarettes.

Damon braces are a good choice for many adults.

Clear or Ceramic Braces

Another popular choice for adults is clear braces. With this type of system, the brackets are clearer than regular braces. The only visible portion when you smile is the arch wire itself. Clear braces can be self-ligating or the more traditional ligating systems. Its transparency makes this type of brace system a popular choice for many adults. With clear braces, you can get straighter teeth, and you can smile with more self-confidence since the brackets blend in with your teeth.

Invisalign: Another Popular Choice

A more recent advancement in getting straight teeth is the Invisalign system. For many adults this is their choice for achieving a straighter smile. The Invisalign system is completely clear and less visible than any other type of traditional braces.

Invisalign does not include traditional braces or arch wires. Instead it consists of a series of aligning trays that the patient wears. The trays are removable, easily cleaned, and are an effective way to get straight teeth if you wear them as your orthodontist suggests. Usually a new tray is required every couple of weeks.

You will be able to chew your food better.Chewing is the first step in digestion. If your teeth are not straight, you will not be able to chew your food correctly so partially unchewed food will go down to your stomach. That can give you an upset stomach
You will avoid dental problems.If you do not get orthodontic treatment when you need it you will have problems with your teeth for years to come; your teeth will be hard to clean. Your gums will hurt. Your teeth will wear in ways that the should not. The effects are significant enough that many adults are now going back to the orthodontist for braces.
You may avoid developing a breathing problem.As you get older the roof your mouth can sometimes partially block the air passages in your nose. That makes you snore loudly, and may contribute to a condition called "sleep apnea." If you get braces you can avoid this possibility.

There are certain foods that should be avoided as they can damage your child's braces or appliances, causing discomfort and delaying treatment.

Your child should avoid hard or sticky food. Also avoid foods that can get stuck in your appliance, and excessive sweets. Examples of foods to avoid include:

* Pizza crust, pretzels
* Ice
* Caramel, candy, bubble gum
* Hard rolls
* Nuts
* Beef Jerky
* Popcorns
* Raw carrots, apples & corn on the cob (cut into small pieces instead)
* Doritos, Tacos, Tostitos, Cheetos, & other foods that ball up in your mouth..
* Soda (very sugary)
* It's not a food but - chewing on pens, pencils or other non-food products

I don’t think my dentist is a real orthodontist?help please I’ve had my braces for over 4 years and I’m 16 years old. I have a pretty bad overbite.
Like our dentist is my parent’s friend so she trusts her but I don’t.
She’s been doing my braces and it’s really weird like I have an overbite and she put a bite ramp which she made herself with that dental adhesive, the one where they glue your brackets on. then that didnt work because it came off and food was stuck under it. Yeah gross I know.
then she gave me rubber bands, that worked kind of but then she was like this isn’t fast enough and stuff and there was no progress.
So then she said that i might need a tooth extraction and I’m thinking in my head “Aren’t there other ways? Isn’t that the last thing you want to do?”

I’m really shy so I can’t really say it to her face so I’m going to ask my mom to tell her next time.
Also my two front teeth aren’t even like level. Like they’re straight but from the side you can see they’re uneven

What is your opinion on this?

Also I looked her name up and it said she was an oral surgeon/dental hygenist
is an oral surgeon the same thing as an orthodontist?

Kayla to the rescue for Joplin!

Check out this local Fresno woman through her job is asking for supplies through her business. Her business was just on the local news and her uncle has a shipping business and they are driving the supplies to Joplin on Monday. Blankets, kids toys, car seats and more.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Clovis woman with ties to Joplin, Missouri is organizing a relief drive for the people who have been left with nothing. Kayla Christiansen has an uncle living in Joplin. She said when she first heard of the devastation, she wanted to go there to help. Instead, she's doing her part here in the Valley by collecting items to send to the Midwest.

For the last two days, Kayla's uncle has been sending her photos of the damage he's seen. He has been working alongside rescuers, trying to find survivors. What she's heard -- and he's experienced -- is hard to imagine.

"When they were digging through the Home Depot store, there was a dad that was holding all of his kids. They had all three died and the dad still had the tightest embrace on his kids, even though they had already passed. And its just stuff like that... it just makes me cry," said Christiansen.

Tuesday night, Kayla's uncle spoke with Action News, describing the storm's aftermath and the couple's efforts to clear the damaged hospital where his girlfriend works as an R.N. "Going room to room, trying to see if there's anybody in there... patients or hospital staff. It's just pretty overwhelming. I can't believe it," said David Hills.

In a conversation Monday, Kayla's uncle asked for her to collect supplies for the people of Joplin. She started mobilizing help immediately and eventually turned to Facebook to help spread the word. So far, the support has been incredible. Kayla's uncle works in the shipping industry and is making the arrangements to get whatever she collects to the people who need it most.

If you think the desire for straight teeth is a trapping of modern society, think again! Extreme Makeovers may be new, but "braces" date as far back as ancient man!

Early History

Even ancient people wanted straight teeth! According to the AAO (American Association of Orthodontists), archaeologists have discovered mummified ancients with crude metal bands wrapped around individual teeth. To close gaps, it has been surmised that catgut did the worknow done by today's orthodontic wire! Later, in 400-500 BC, Hippocrates and Aristotle both ruminated about ways to straighten teeth and fix various dental conditions. Straight teeth have been on our minds a very long time!

While Greece was in its Golden Age, the Etruscans (the precursors of the Romans) were burying their dead with appliances that were used to maintain space and prevent collapse of the dentition during life. Then in a Roman tomb in Egypt, a researcher found a number of teeth bound with a gold wire -- the first documented ligature wire! At the time of Christ, Aurelius Cornelius Celsus first recorded the treatment of teeth by finger pressure. Despite all this evidence and experimentation, no significant events in orthodontics really occurred until the much later, in around the 1700s (although dentistry as a whole made great advancements in the interim). It should be noted that in Medieval times, specialized barbers often performed dental "operations", extractions, and procedures such as blood-letting. Let's be glad we live in the 21st Century!

We all want to have pretty smiles. It says a lot about our general health when we have nice teeth. Thus, data: It's important to take care of them and maintain them. The last thing you want is to find out that due to improper dental care, you are going to have to go to the orthodontist for Medicaid braces.

Toothbrush: Any orthodontists will tell you should brush twice or thrice a day, preferably after meals. Many people don't brush properly, thinking that they can make up for lost time with brushing extra hard. This is not the right way to do it. It only takes a couple of minutes to brush in little circles around each tooth. And make sure to remember that there are three sides to hit: the top, back and front. Don't forget to pay attention to your gum line, either - that's where most of the bacteria are anyway.

Floss: Proper flossing technique is even more difficult to master than proper brushing technique. Take a piece of floss approximately 18 inches long and wrap it around your two index fingers. Go up and down between each tooth, and if need be approach it from angles, continuing the up and down movement. Because brushing only reaches three of the five parts of each tooth, flossing hits the other two - the sides. And while most people floss at night, it doesn't hurt to floss again after lunch. When you do your co-workers will be less likely to smell what you just ate on your breath.

Tongue: It is here much of the bacteria in your mouth like to collect. It's not quite as damaging to your teeth, but it can be just as offensive. When you have bad breath it's probably because you have a gray-brown-yellow layer of bacteria on your tongue. Brushing it away is one way to get rid of it. Another is with…

Mouthwash: This is a great way to get rid of all the extra gunk swimming in your mouth after the other precautions you've taken. It will leave your mouth feeling clean and fresh for longer than if you just brush and floss. 30 seconds is the standard swish-gargle routine.

The key to taking good care of your teeth is dedication. If after a week of flossing every night you begin to get lazy and say, "Oh I don't feel like flossing tonight," you will quickly develop a routine of missing nights of flossing. It's not like your teeth will be forgiving. Bacteria feast at night, and if you don't get rid of them they will remain. If you skip flossing once every blue moon you may be able to get away with it, but any more than that and you're asking for it. If you stay dedicated to your dental supplies and your routine, you'll feel better about your smile. Any orthodontist can tell you that.

The word from the government is gas prices could go down as much as 55 cents a gallon by Memorial Day Weekend May 27-30. In Los Angeles and Orange Counties, the average cost of a gallon of gas dropped by about 2.1 to 2.3 cents this week, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California. The drop follows a week where crude oil prices tumbled, which followed a month where oil companies saw record profits and a political backlash against the price of gas that culminated in the five biggest oil companies being called into a senate hearing over a proposal to eliminate $2 billion in tax breaks to the oil companies.

Use oral irrigators or mouth wash. Using oral irrigators or gargling with mouth wash helps to make sure that remaining food is removed.

Avoid foods that are hard, sticky, crunchy, and chewy to keep your braces undamaged.

Study: Half Of All "Likes" Come Less Than 2 Hours After Posting

One primary objective of many social media marketers - and the brands they represent - is to grow a base of Facebook fans and Twitter followers. But a new study from "link-sharing solutions" provider Visibili suggests that, for brands and media organizations, pages with more fans received fewer "likes" on each individual post and, curiously, engagement went down as the number of people involved went up. Additionally, the research study shows that half of all "likes" happen within 1 hour and 20 minutes of posting, and 70% happen within 4 hours. "Likes" taper off over time, and approximately 95% are received within 22 hours. Furthermore, once a new post is up, there's considerably less potential for an older one to produce "likes," so brands should give messages time to play out and maximize engagement before updating.
